Japan Supports Health Care in Western Uganda

The Embassy of Japan is to hand over two projects implemented with the fund of 174,174 USD in Western Uganda: one for construction of a Health Centre in Kabale District (100,067) today, and the other for construction of a general ward in Isingiro District (74,107) tomorrow, 1 March 2013.

H.E. Kazuo Minagawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, will officiate the commissioning of these projects.

Bukinda Sub-County in Kabale District, with a population of 149,000, is commercially very active due to its location on the main highway to Rwanda, but has only two health centres far in the mountainous villages which are not easy to access. Thus, many villagers cannot go to the centres and more than half of HIV/AIDS patients are unable to get proper treatment while 42% of mothers deliver at home without midwife. Through this project, implemented by Reach One Touch One Ministries (ROTOM), an accessible health centre has been constructed to improve the access to health care services for the people in the Sub-County.

At the Mbaare Health Centre in Isingiro district, there are out-patient and maternity wards, but no general ward. Thus, even gravely ill patients have to sleep in the hallways or in consultation rooms. Sometimes, they are accommodated in maternity wards, with a risk of cross-infection to infants and pregnant women. Through this project, implemented by Mbaare Sub-County, a general ward has been constructed with the medical equipment, solar power systems and water tank provided to improve the health service environment for the people (some 22,900) in the Sub-county.

The donations by Japan are part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, a total of 161 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.

Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
